oncology – the study of cancer

Neoplasms

  • neoplasm ニィオプラズム – an abnormal new growth of tissue
    • malignant neoplasm = cancer, spread and cause serious illness or death
    • benign neoplasm = don’t spread and are less harmful

  • malignant tumour(=cancer) are characterized by rapid growth and invasiveness インヴェイシヴネス
  • metastasisステェイシス- the tumour may invade local tissue or may spread to distant parts of the body
    1. primary – the original tumour
    2. secondary – neoplasm which is the resul of metastasis
verbinvade – to enter amd spread throughout a part of the body
nouninvasion – process
adjinvasive – have ability to spread
※The cancers which metastasize are called invasive cancers
  • lump こぶ or swelling 浮腫 – a collection of tissue or fluid which is visible or palpable
    • can be palpated ot felt with the fingers
    • a lump may be due to a neoplasm, inflammation or fluid accumulation
